Guards

Guard columns should be used with all HPLC columns in order to prevent contamination and reduction in lifetime of the important analytical column.  A guard column provides a highly efficient means to extending the lifetime of the analytical column by not only filtering the analyte and its matrix, but also by providing protection from chemical attack at extremes of pH. 

Fortis Technologies supplys guard columns suitable for use with all its analytical columns. Cartridges should be selected ideally with the same packing material as that in the analytical column.  Cartridges are sold in multi packs for convenience.

Filters

An alternative to using a guard system is the use of an in-line filter.  Filters are a simple cost-effective means to providing a quick efficient clean up for occasional 'dirty' samples. 

Situated between the analytical column and its usual 10-32 Peek fitting  coming from the autosampler.  The filter contains a simple 2 micron mesh similar to that in the analytical column frit for additional protection from erroneous particulate matter.
